Nagaland: The Vibrant And Culturally Rich State Of India
Nagaland officially became the 16th state of India on 1st December 1963. It’s located in the northeastern region of the country comprising eight states, commonly referred to as ‘seven sisters’ and a ‘brother’ state.
With an area of 16,579 square km, it’s one of the smallest states of India. The state is bordered by Arunachal Pradesh to the north, Manipur to the south, Assam to the west, and the Sagaing region of Myanmar (Naga Self-administered zone). The state has sixteen districts occupied by seventeen major tribes and other sub-tribes.
Each tribe is unique in terms of dialect, customs, and dress. The state is an amalgamation of different tribes with distinct character. The official language is English but the locals typically communicate in ‘Nagamese’
Nagaland has a diverse and rich history of customs and traditions. It's engulfed in mystery and occupied by vibrant people. Dancers, headhunters, mountains, warriors, forests, and valleys are synonyms of the state.
There is no written documentation of Naga history but its existence is known through folklore passed down the generations orally. The oral traditions which include forms such as songs, poems, storytelling, and chants have helped preserve the rich and unique history of Nagas.
Old practices such as headhunting and animism slowly disappeared with the introduction of Christianity by Christian missionaries from Europe and the United States. The present Nagaland is modern and catching up with the world, yet people have not shied away from its roots and embraced it fully.
