Your Ultimate Guide to Nagaland

Tuensang

The Land of Culture

Exploring Tuensang with Insider Tips and Fresh Ideas

When it comes to the cultural relevance of districts and destinations in Nagaland, other places seldom exhibit cultural traditions from multiple Naga tribes. While most other districts remain home to one or two indigenous Naga tribes, Tuensang is home to multiple tribes, with each group demonstrating some of the richest practices of tribal culture in Nagaland.

Although Tuensang was one of the three initial districts drawn out in Nagaland, the region has witnessed lower degrees of development and modern infrastructure. However, the flip side is that visitors get to see and sample many parts of local Naga culture in its undiluted and authentic form.

Endearingly called ‘The Land of Culture,’ here’s all you want to know before planning your visit to Tuensang.

How to Reach

Travel By Road

If you arrive at Dimapur either by flight or train, regional taxis in the city can take you to Tuensang at reasonable fares.

The first route is through NH 29 heading towards the capital city of Kohima. Passing through Chakhabama and Zunheboto, this route is about 284 KM and takes more than nine hours by car. The alternate route is to take NH 129 heading towards Golaghat in Assam (from Dimapur) and cross Amguri and Tuli via NH 2 before reaching Tuensang. This route covers over 300 KM and could take over 10 hours to reach the destination depending on traffic.

Travel By Air

Like all other districts in Nagaland, the lone airport at Dimapur is the only landing place for commercial flights. With Tuensang being over 280 kms from Dimapur, you’ll have to choose alternative means of transportation (mostly by road) to reach the district.

The Nagaland State Transport’s helicopter service also plies from Dimapur to Tuensang. Airfare costs about ₹2925 per head and the journey is about 45 minutes. The rates can vary from season to season.

By Railway

Like commercial airways, Dimapur remains the only city with railway access when you visit Tuensang. So, be prepared to spend a night there or begin a long drive when you arrive.

FAQs

Expect chilly, dry winters and subtropical temperatures when you visit during the summers. The temperature is moderate enough for city-dwellers to find pleasant, but visitors from colder regions may find summers slightly humid.

If you’re done visiting the local sights in Tuensang, there are several other districts you can head to from here. The culturally rich Mon and Longleng districts are just to the north. Mokokchung is another major district that lies close by to the east. Towards the south, you can also visit the Kiphire and Zunheboto districts.

Tuensang’s rich demography includes tribes like Chang, Khiamniungan, Sangtam, and Yimchunger which all associate with the district in a profound manner. So, you’ll find cultural and heritage elements of all these tribes in different areas of the district. It’s one of the only districts with such a diverse range of tribes associated with its culture.

The best time is relative and depends on the kind of experiences you desire. However, most visitors enjoy the spring and summer seasons the most when the dry cold of winter has passed and the weight of heavy monsoon hasn’t arrived yet. It’s also the time when most of the post-harvest festivities and celebrations take place.
