There’s a lot to unpack and unravel when you journey through this prime district with countless offerings. Whether you’re a newbie in the northeast or a grizzled globetrotter, here’s all you need to know!
Places to Visit
How to Reach
By Air
The nearest airport is Dimapur Airport, the state’s commercial hub located less than two hours from Kohima. You can also land in Imphal, capital of the neighboring state of Manipur, but this city is over four hours away by road.
Both airports welcome direct flights from the nation’s capital Delhi and a host of other major cities via connecting networks. However, we advise landing in Dimapur owing to its proximity with Kohima and convenience of travel.
There’s a state-run chopper service that flies passengers from Dimapur to Kohima while charging Rs. 1950 per head (Prices may vary from season to season). However, it only runs on Mondays and Fridays, and availability depends greatly on weather conditions.
By Railway
The nearest railway station is also at Dimapur. The best part of arriving by train is that you get to savor the sprawling plains of neighboring state Assam and get down in the heart of Dimapur city where cabs and local transportation are aplenty!
By Road
Two national highways (NH-29 and NH-2) pass through Kohima, allowing convenient road access from Dimapur or Imphal (depending on where you land/arrive).
We advise taking NH-29 from Dimapur to Kohima. The travel is shorter, the landscapes more memorable, and cabs keep plying to and fro the whole day. Standard taxi fares cost about Rs. 330 per head.
However, there are premium cab services that offer more convenience and comfort at higher prices.
FAQs
Yes. The Government of Nagaland requires outside visitors to secure an ILP (Inner Line Permit) that documents your identity, nature of visit, duration of stay, etc. ILP passes for tourists cost about Rs. 50 – 100 and can last for anywhere between 15 to 30 days.
Kohima has moderately temperate weather with a comfortable summer, a considerably wet and foggy monsoon, and relatively cold winter. Dress warm if you’re visiting in winter because temperatures can drop to single digits during January. Come expecting incessant rains if you’re visiting in summer or autumn.
Local dishes and delicacies are easy to find if you’re an adventurous foodie. Consider sampling these Naga and Angami recipes while in town. There are, however, ample restaurants, eateries, and food joints where you can find anything from Indian and Chinese cuisine to Continental menus and fast food chains.
