Located in the southwest of Mokokchung, Longkhum is the highest-altitude village in the Ao region. To travel to Longkhum, buses/taxis are available from Mokokchung town.
During the headhunting era, the village was also known as the vanguard village of the Ao people since it was the first line of defense when confronting other tribe villages.
Attractions in Longkhum
- Longlangba: Also known as the ‘stone Bridge’ of Longkhum village, this natural rock formation makes its way across a dense forest making it look like a man-made structure.
These rock formations also carry the footprints of Jena and Etiben known as the Romeo and Juliet of Aos.
- Mongzü ki: According to the legends of the Ao people, eagles are an incarnation of the deceased. This Eagle Cave (Mongzü ki) was believed to be the resting place of the people who were no longer with us.
- Cherry blossoms bloom in Longkhum village in September and October attracting people from near and far.
- The pine groves, planted by the British in 1945, do not just contribute to the beauty of the village but also are a reminder of the colonial past.

Recognized as the ‘Rural Tourism Village’ by the Gov of Nagaland, Mopungchuket is one of the oldest and biggest villages in Mokokchung. It is also awarded as the cleanest village in the district.
To reach Mopungchuket daily buses and taxis are available from Mokokchung town and require around 30 minutes to reach the destination.
The village is also home to Jena and Etiben whose tragic love story has made them known as the Romeo and Juliet of the Ao people. Two towers are erected in memory of these lovers within the village.

The biggest and oldest village in Mokokchung, Ungma is located 3km away from Mokokchung town.
It is also believed that Ungma village is the origin of the Ao people and thus holds a very significant importance when it comes to the culture and traditions of the people in the region.
People visiting Ungma can also learn and experience the traditional lifestyle of the local people.

Molungyimsen is a village steeped in history, celebrated as the first known community to accept Christianity after the arrival of American missionaries, a pivotal event in Nagaland’s transformation into a Christian state. Set against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty, the village is perched on a scenic hill that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
At the summit, you’ll find the remarkable Lichee tree, lovingly planted by Dr. E.W. Clark in 1878.
