Zünheboto

Land of Warriors

Explore The Historic Zünheboto District: How To Get There

Zünheboto is one of the districts in Nagaland which is yet to be fully explored. It’s steadily catching up with modernity, yet when you delve deeper, the place welcomes you with history, myth, and folktales.

The name of the district is derived from two sets of words: ‘Zunhebo’ and ‘To’. “Zunhebo” is a flowering shrub, scientifically known as Leucosceptrum. The flowering plant has white leaves and is grown abundantly in this region. “To” means hilltop.

With an area of over 1,255 sq. km, the hilly place is covered by evergreen forests. The district is home to the Satoi range which is a well-known paradise for bird watchers and ornithologists. It comes under India’s ‘Important Bird Area’ together with ‘Endemic Bird Area’. Some of the endangered bird species such as Peacock Pheasant, Blythi Tragopan, and Khalij Pheasant are seen in this range.

The district was officially recognized on 19th December 1973. It’s the home of Naga Sümi, one of the major ethnic groups of the state. They are known to be the Martial tribe among Nagas, hence the moniker “Land of Warriors”.

The district is located in the heart of the state bordered by the Mokokchung district in the north; the Phek district in the south; the Kiphire district to the east and the Wokha district in the West.
